This was the kind of teashop you might only happen upon…tucked away on a quiet street in a cozy village, always full of the scents of freshly-brewed tea and treats right out of the oven, warm, comforting, a refuge from rain and wind and chill. You order a Lavender Fog and the woman behind the counter eyes you curiously.
“Do you know the legend of the Lavender Fog?”
“No, it’s a real thing?”
“Oh yes, it happens every so often, this time of year, when the fog descends so thick that you might lose your way only steps from your own door.”
You shudder. You have never experienced fog such as that but you have not resided in this region for very long.
“Strange colors you can see, within the fog,” she continues. “And odd sounds you might hear.”
“What causes it?” you ask.
“Oh there are many theories, of course. This land, it was a place for strange occurrences long before man set foot here, built shelter against the storm and such.”
“Against the night and the cold.”
“Indeed.” She nods sagely. “And how came you here, then?”
You stammer, because you are not entirely sure what drew you here. “Looking for a quiet place to live, I suppose.”
She laughs, and you are startled. “Who told you it was quiet here?!”
You shrug and turn away from the counter. Beyond the wide windows there it is: the swirling fog and within it is the most lovely shade of lavender, shifting and undulating. You feel it is calling to you, inviting you to explore its dreadful wonder.
“Don’t venture out there,” she says quietly. “Not til you’ve had your tea, dearie.”
Do you hear, perhaps, a trace of menace in her voice? A warning, perhaps, or something much much worse. The world has disappeared outside, and there is only the two of you, wrapped within the fog like a burial shroud.
