Image of perfume label featuring black watercolor ink portrait of a handsome man. Summer 2020 Collection.

A thoroughly masculine aura of adventure: a bracing and bold mixture of arid desert and fresh-cut grass varieties with sea moss, breezy accents of ozone and aquatic notes, then intensified by a broad-leaf cigar tobacco accord.

from the diary of Selwyn Parslow, Summer 1820
...it seemed a rather ordinary Wednesday on the High Street of our humble hamlet as I came to the village in the company of our dear Llewellyn and the Wilde boy (my brother being previously indisposed, fiddling with one of his many inventions) and I meant to accompany our cook to the stalls and down to the wharf to examine the day’s catch but Trevor begged my indulgence to stop in at the haberdashery. I should think the boy has enough fine garments but he seemed intent upon having my opinion on a weskit or cravat or some such. As I am not rude by nature, I agreed but as he held the door for me, my attention was called by Hortense, who loitered at a shop further up the lane, accompanied by a few of her aunt’s charges. Trevor smiled at them all broadly, but they beckoned to me specifically. I informed him I must speak with them and he entered the shop alone.

“Ladies,” I greeted them. “Was anyone wanting my tutelage this month? I am generally available for lessons presently.”

They all laughed softly and fanned themselves against the heat. Mid-morning but not a jot of breeze from the sea so the air was quite close.

“Pardon the intrusion, Miss Selwyn, but my aunt was wondering if Mr. Wilde was planning to attend the ball next month?”

“At the Asheton’s, you mean?”

“Yes miss.”

(For a moment, dear diary, I was taken aback at the thought that the old lady meant to have him as an escort. Then I realized she was likely considering him for Hortense, who is rather comely though a shade too vulgar for her age.)

“I suspect he will, in the course of our brief acquaintance I’ve never known him to refuse a fete.”

“He does love his sport, he does,” one of the other girls commented and we all rounded on her with expressions of shocked inquiry. I could not recall her name in the moment.  “A swordsman of some calibre he is.”

“Phoebe Throckmorton!” she was scolded by Hortense. “Whatever you may believe you know of the gentleman is not fit for gossip!”

And yet...it seemed after a moment that their outrage had been manufactured for my benefit.

“I couldn’t say,” I replied dryly.

“Hasn’t sought to parry with you, Miss Selwyn? I should think you’d give him what for,” the girl remarked and she smirked at me. Impudent baggage!

I heard my name being called, it was the clerk from the haberdashery. When I turned back to the girls they had scattered much as hens in the barnyard. I shall have to pay a visit to Mrs. Fubbs, but without this seeming libertine my brother has seen fit to make our houseguest...
