“Now then, dearie, I believe you are prepared for most eventualities, but no independent woman worth their essential salts should be out and about in the wide world without -”
She held up an empty bottle. “Zombie Repellent!”
I cracked up. “Are you serious? Zombies? Really?!”
“Metaphorical or actual, the buggers are EVERYWHERE.”
“But…there’s nothing in that bottle.”
“Ah, well that’s the secret, my girl – it only looks empty. Just like those creatures, eh? And how does a girl blend in amongst the shuffling hoards? By pretending to be an airhead when necessary! They can’t eat yer brains if ya haven’t got any!” Cackle.
I sniffed, and it was a very airy kind of scent indeed, like a cool breeze.
“Well, I suppose it couldn’t hurt, right?”
Shadow leapt up on the counter as the old woman rung up my purchases, and the total came to much less than I expected.
“Shadow says you should get the ‘Woman of Taste and Distinction’ discount,” the old woman said as she carefully wrapped the bottles and put them into a basket.
“Why thank you, Shadow,” I said to the cat, and I petted her affectionately. Her fur was so soft and she began to purr, it was a lovely soothing sound.
“Now then, ye must visit me again with any questions; I’ll be here, I’ve always been here, you know. I’m sure you’ll find us again when next you need us!”
I gave my thanks to the witch and her familiar and then standing outside on the sidewalk amid the traffic I thought: did that really just happen? Did I witness actual magic?! My mind reeled, and my nose was full of all the amazing scents of the potions I had purchased. The proof was in the basket, so to speak.
As I walked down the street once more I felt like I was embarking upon a grand adventure…and I had the tools at my disposal to make the most of it. Even if – especially if – the Zombie Apocalypse happened. Like, tomorrow. As I was learning, you just never knew what the day could bring…
…The End. ?
