It’s late afternoon, as you wander along a country lane, feeling the air turn humid with an approaching storm. You come upon a cozy cottage and take shelter within its charming structure as the cloudburst arrives...an atmosphere of honeysuckle blossoms, their petals heavy with rain, tart blackberries still ripening within their brambles, the sharp ozone of the lightning flash across the sky, enfolded within a soft dewy musk.

from the diary of Selwyn Parslow, Summer 1820

...James had heard from Adam St. Aubyn that the cottage in Primrose Lane was available to let and thought it might be beneficial to Trevor to look into becoming the tenant, as his proposal of marriage had caused much Consternation betwixt all of us. Diary, I must confess I am not angry with his audacity, but rather confused. I am not a woman looked upon as handsome by society, though Father was good to laud me for my studies and had hoped I might find some solace in the Academic life. But I do so love our humble hamlet above the sea and am loathe to leave it. I think of my dear Forsy, traveling the world and having adventures, and wonder if it is too late for me. I meant to look at the cottage myself, perhaps I could lease it and leave the manor to the men; solitude would bring solace, and the inauguration of my independence which it is high time for me to claim.

Mr. Childers was kind enough to convey me in his barouche as he was on his way back to the village after meeting with my brother, the day was ponderous with the threat of rain, but thus far the storm had not struck the coast to the fullest. A gentle mist was falling as I strode amidst the grounds, rather overgrown and thick with flowering vines and brambles, the mingled scents of flowers and fruit so heavy in the air. I felt the breeze rise and lightning flashed behind the clouds, distant thunder percussing somewhere over the sea. I quickly sought shelter, and my fears were confirmed as the rain began moments later, drenching all I could see beyond the cottage.

Moments later I heard a sound of hooves upon the road and then the door burst open to reveal Trevor, his greatcoat thoroughly soaked. I had that breathless feeling again to view him looking so vulnerable, as if in the grip of emotions beyond his reasoning. Those eyes so imploring.

“I would not dare drive you from your own home, dear lady,” he said, with as much dignity as he could muster in the moment.

“Please,” I said, gesturing toward his coat, “you will be afflicted by the ague if you remain in those wet clothes!”

We set about starting a fire and though it would be seen by any member of polite society as scandalous that he was in a state of undress as his shirt and weskit and coat dried by the hearth and I prepared a pot of tea, we appeared in that moment, as the storm raged above our heads, to be inhabiting our own idyll. He remained at a distance though his eyes sought to penetrate my reserve.

“I am pleased you are wearing the pearl,” he murmured. “Pearls should always be worn next to the skin.”

“As you will not take it back, I suppose I felt such a beautiful object should not be hidden away.”

“And neither should you, Selwyn.”

I listened to the flames, and to the rain, and the wind, and wondered if my mind and my heart were in agreement with his observation. I was very much on the precipice of a revelation...
