Louisiana Territory, 1722 :

She is the Lady of the Light and Shadow, the heiress of a power handed down by her mother, her mother's mother and so on, all the way back to the first Daughter of the Voodoo, who was imbued with the power in the jungles of the Dark Island. She is the sister of the wind, the daughter of the fire. The creatures of the Louisiana bayou are her brothers and sisters, her best friends and cousins. Her name is whispered with reverence that borders on fear; she is loved and respected, and her voodoo has brought love, prosperity, happiness and good luck to those who've sought her out.

She is the keeper.

For all her powers and the endless wonders she works for others, she is still a woman with a woman's needs...a woman's longings...a woman's loneliness. It has been too long since she felt a lover's breath upon her neck...his words whispering in her ear...the feel of flesh against flesh.

The Daughter of Light and Shadow, the Guardian of generations' worth of knowledge of the Voodoo, works her magicks in the dark of night when the moon waxes most powerfully. All she wants is a devoted lover to ease her loneliness if only for a little while. She sees him in her mind, painting a picture as she weaves her spell. She can sense he's out there...already close at hand as if waiting for her summons. She can feel him drawing closer, responding to her siren's call to bring her the love she so desperately craves.

The moon rises twice more with no sign of the man of her dreams. She wonders if perhaps it's her destiny that she can find love for others, but not herself. Then, on the third moonrise, on a night of thunder and rain, there comes a knock on her cabin door. A traveller, seeking shelter from the night, flashes a rakish smile even as his ice blue eyes melt her lonely heart. She invites him to take refuge by her fire, and to warm his insides with an herbal brew handed down for generations. The stranger accepts, takes a seat by her hearth and bids her join him. Her will seems not her own as she sits beside him, lost in his eyes and warmed by the deep, almost musical timbre of his voice. She has just enough time to thank her mother and grandmothers for their magicks before passion takes hold and both she and the man of her dreams are lost to the night..

New America Colonies, 1613:

The Sisters of the Moon sing out to the sky. They are thankful for the Grimoire full of recipes, dates, and paths of the stars. Within are the ancient recipes handed down to them from their Mother, and from her Mother. The Sisters brought them here, to the new world. They heal, they empower the weak, they find love, and they challenge evil. They teach others to control the winds, to sway a man's eyes to theirs. Inside the silk bag they carry the tools of the trade, the kit, their precious pouches. Twelve vials of oil and herb, meant to save you from the thing in the shadows, or meant to draw the thing in the shadows. This was the way of the wise woman.

The Black Hills, 1777:

The elderly woman slips softy from her tipi, it is a fine home, made with the hide of the Buffalo laced with that of the Antelope. She moves her fingertips across it, thanking her cousins for their warmth. Above her, in the moonlight, she sees brother Eagle cross the sky. He is the eyes of the tribe, alerting them to those who might want to hurt them, take their corn, daughters, or secrets. The woman moves to a larger structure, one guarded by a youth. He bows to her, and with great respect, he opens the flap for her to enter. The top of the structure is open to the Moon, her silver light cascading down to light the containers filled with herbs and hardened sap from the trees. The woman takes these essences, mixes them, and holds them up to the silvered moon. In hushed tones says what can only be a blessing. The Moon appears to twinkle its light at the woman, the light making the woman's hair even more radiant. Silver upon Silver.

Vieux Carré, New Orleans Louisiana, 1831:

The thief walks out of the New Orleans voodoo shop, counting his money. He knows the suspicious shop keeper should've paid far more than she did for the potions and the recipe book, but he's in no position to complain. He's got enough to get a full belly and a drunken stupor, and that's good enough for him.

But the food makes him sick. The wine tastes like vinegar. The bordello brings him nothing but disappointment. For weeks, he wanders, a man dying of hunger and thirst, going mad with unfulfilled passion. He screams to the heavens, wondering who has cursed him so.

Arizona Territory, 1881:

In the back of the small building touting Doctors remedies, new fangled prescriptions, and Laudanum seven ways, a slight woman with eyes of jade sits behind a small round table. She is adorned with gold, and emeralds that flash with green fire. She owns the pharmacy building, and most others in the small town. She is known as the lady of the light: and it is said she can help you see in the darkness. Next to her, in a glass case sit a bevy of bottles, their contents of every color and description. If you are lucky you may see her cat wink at you. You can see the finery all around her; tapestries, china cups, small statues of hand carved marble.

"You are ill," she states. "The doctors, they cannot help you, it is not sickness that you have, but a need for love, for the return of a man." She nods knowingly. She extends her hand under a silken cloth and presents you with a small silver hued box. "Take this, my dear. Inside you will find twelve oils. They are not medicine, but they are powerful, nonetheless." You stare at the small box, unsure, but excitement builds. Are you doing something others would think naughty? Her green eyes twinkle in the gaslight of the small parlor room. "Out there," she motions to the front of the pharmacy, "are the cure-alls of man. In here", she taps on the table with one scarlet clad index finger, "In here are the cures of the heart. But you must be cautious. Restraining one's free will is an abomination. Use what I bestow upon you wisely, and perhaps you will even find that there is someone...better suited for you." As you stand to exit, she grasps your hand; she looks deep into your eyes. "These are not toys, they are power, and they are truth. And should you get worse with your heartache, please find a more competent physician, for a seer can't make a physical problem well. Be well and take care." You clutch the precious box close to your chest as you cross the busy street of Tombstone .
